DGB Named Best South African Wine Producer of the Past 25 Years

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Local wine and spirits producer DGB has secured a landmark international victory, being named Best Producer South Africa at the 2026 Mundus Vini Spring Tasting. The award marks the fifth consecutive year the company has held the title, a feat unprecedented in the competition’s history.

In a rare recognition of long-term consistency, DGB was also honoured as the Best Producer in South Africa Over the Past 25 Years. The accolades were presented at the ProWein International Wine Trade Fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, held March 15–17.

Recognition Built on Long-Term Consistency

Christian Wolf, director of degustation at Mundus Vini, noted that the achievement reflects a structural commitment to quality rather than a single standout vintage.

“In the opinion of Mundus Vini, five years in a row as best producer, as well as recognition over 25 years, is a significant achievement,” Wolf said. “We have not seen this before. It shows clearly that this is not a one-time success.”

The 38th edition of the tasting saw an international panel of experts evaluate approximately 5,500 wines from across the globe.

Medal Success and Standout Varietals

The producer’s title was supported by an expansive medal tally across its portfolio, including one Grand Gold, 27 Gold and 19 Silver medals.

A primary individual highlight was the 2024 Bellingham The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc, which claimed the Best of Show South Africa White award. The title is reserved exclusively for the highest-scoring wine within its classification.

A Diverse Portfolio of Heritage and Export Brands

DGB Executive Chairman Tim Hutchinson credited the win to the collective efforts of the viticulture and cellar teams.

“This recognition is a tremendous honour for our company and for South African wine as a whole,” Hutchinson said. “Our consistent achievements reflect the passion, dedication and craftsmanship of our winemakers.”

The success was driven by a cross-section of heritage estates and global export labels, including:

  • Boschendal and Bellingham
  • Backsberg and Franschhoek Cellar
  • Fryer’s Cove and Old Road Wine Co.
  • Avontuur, Douglas Green, Tall Horse, The Beachhouse and Vineyard Friends

Impact on the Global Market

From an industry perspective, such sustained validation plays a strategic role in strengthening South Africa’s position in competitive export markets.

The results raise a broader question for the global trade: Is DGB’s recognition a reflection of individual operational discipline, or does it signal a wider maturation of the South African wine industry? As international consumers look beyond traditional European regions, these accolades may further shift global attention toward the Southern Hemisphere.
