Cape Town Musician Challenges Media Narratives with Explosive New Track
Cape Town-based multi-genre musician Derek Eyden has released his powerful new song, ‘Blood on Your Lips’. Blending high-energy rock with hard-hitting social commentary, the track delivers a necessary jolt to provoke critical thinking. With bold lyrics and a raw, emotional sound, ‘Blood on Your Lips’ confronts the tarnished legacy of mainstream media corporations and their carefully orchestrated narratives that manipulate public opinion.
The song challenges listeners to question where their news originates and whether the opinions they consume are truly balanced and nonpartisan. This message is particularly relevant in a world where approximately 80% of major news and media outlets are controlled by a small group of powerful corporations. ‘Blood on Your Lips’ invites listeners to reconsider the credibility of the information they receive and engage in meaningful conversations about media influence and responsibility.
Disrupting the Status Quo: A Protest Song with Purpose
Written, produced, and performed by multi-instrumentalist and composer Derek Eyden, ‘Blood on Your Lips’ is more than just a rock song—it’s a provocative statement against the ideology of the accepted status quo. Through high-energy guitar riffs and bold lyrics, the track challenges the manipulative power dynamics at play within legacy media.
The song is accompanied by a visually striking music video featuring a group of rebellious teenagers responding to the track’s call to action. This powerful imagery underscores the urgency of delivering this message to the younger generation, who are often unaware of the implications of passive news consumption. The video amplifies the song’s hard-hitting message, urging viewers to question neatly packaged news narratives and make their voices heard.
Derek’s approach to the creative process was instinctual and organic, allowing the emotionally charged guitar riffs to set the stage for his provocative lyrics. He explains, “The song is emotionally charged, provocative, and clear in its message. It couldn’t have taken shape in any other genre but rock.” This authenticity shines through, cementing ‘Blood on Your Lips’ as a powerful protest anthem for the digital age.
A Call to Critical Thinking and Action
‘Blood on Your Lips’ isn’t just music; it’s a call to action. The track encourages listeners to critically evaluate the information they consume and confront the manipulative narratives perpetuated by mainstream media. Derek’s message is clear: question the narrative, demand transparency, and reclaim your voice.
Recorded in 2024 at Derek’s home studio in Cape Town, the track was mixed by Dane Taylor at Taylor Soundworks and mastered by Tim Lengfeld at TL Mastering. The accompanying music video, directed by Derek himself, was produced by Deepfried Music & Film Productions in association with Deep South Films, with cinematography by Ryan Gordon.
A follow-up single, set to release later in 2025, will explore the complexities of responding to media manipulation, continuing the conversation ignited by ‘Blood on Your Lips’. To support this movement, a crowdfunding campaign is underway for the next music video, inviting fans to contribute to the cause.
‘Blood on Your Lips’ is part of Derek’s upcoming EP, which is set for release towards the end of April. The single is now available on all major streaming platforms and as a download on Bandcamp, where listeners have the option to adjust the amount they wish to pay for the track.
