London-based alternative artist Anna Wolf has released her highly anticipated new single FREE today, captivating listeners with her signature blend of haunting soundscapes and emotional depth.
Often described as “the love child of Sia and Johnny Cash,” Anna Wolf’s music showcases her unique ability to merge emotional vulnerability with raw intensity. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Anna began her musical journey at just five years old, using songwriting as an outlet to cope with her experiences of domestic abuse.
FREE, produced by Alex Thomas (Air, Anna Calvi), exemplifies Wolf’s tradition of deeply emotional storytelling, featuring a sound she characterises as “cinematic, visceral, distortionate valve synth.” In her own words, Anna shares, “FREE speaks of finding yourself caught between old patterns and the new possibilities of finding love. It’s about being stuck in relationships that don’t serve you, staying because it feels familiar and ‘romantically abusive.’ I spent years in those kinds of relationships. No one could have talked me out of them. I had to learn to let go for myself. The moment I did, I experienced a deep sense of liberation and self-love. It was incredibly freeing to accept myself fully, flaws and all.”

Her latest single is a powerful reflection on breaking free from toxic cycles, a message she hopes resonates with her listeners. “Flaws are necessary,” Anna elaborates. “They create the contrast we need to see the black and white in life, helping us find balance and make decisions from a place of love rather than fear. I hope this song speaks to others in the way it healed me.”
Anna’s diverse career speaks volumes. In 2019, she became the first South African artist to win the Grand Prize at the Global Unsigned Only Competition, solidifying her place in the music world. With collaborations alongside notable artists such as Sir Johnny Clegg and members from bands like Stereophonics and Blondie, Anna’s sound continues to evolve.
As she works on a new body of work set for release in 2025, Anna promises to blend organic, acoustic guitar, and tribal sounds with her signature emotional depth. Fans are eagerly awaiting her next moves. As Anna puts it, “When making an artistic choice, intention is everything. Focusing on the artistry of the project, the playfulness of every body of work, and not taking myself too seriously is key to keeping grounded and letting the work speak for itself.”
